ME: RE: Re: The origin of the EnhydraME concept

Peter,

Check out http://www.java-x.net/. These guys have begun a gaming server on
top of Enhydra with J2ME clients [chess, etc.]. I believe they're using
kXML, but I'm not certain. Robert Balahura, see "CC" list, is a friend up
there who might be able to give some feedback.

With respect to xparseJ, I'm sadly somewhat ignorant. I've read some XML
parser analysis by Eric Giguere and others on the KVM interest list, and it
appears that most developers recommend kXML. Eric G. is the proud papa of
nanoXML, but doesn't appear to want to maintain it beyond its current
iteration.

We're expecting, at least early on here in the USA, that most uses of J2ME
devices will be employee focused. Here, the ROI of developing the
application is clear [more meter reading in one day, more field repairs done
per day, etc.]. In the consumer space, where WAP has only been somewhat
successful here, we don't see J2ME taking off wildly [no over the air
provisioning of J2ME MIDlets yet, unclear how compatible early OTA solutions
will be between carriers, etc.]. The one exception is gaming, where I think
people will go to the trouble to download a MIDlet if they can call out to
the network to play a high-res multiplayer game.

I look forward to your next email of analysis on xparseJ.

Hi,

Thanks for the welcome.

I'd like to offer myself as an interface between J2ME implementations on
actual handsets and enhydra.org. My real interests lie in kXML, kSOAP and
distributed gaming architectures.

My initial test of the Accompli 008 has offered many interesting things.

It seems that the first realease of MIDP through a KVM in the UK, will be a
slow and slightly painful one. Its kinda like the early days of Java Applets
crashing your web browser.

In particular though you really have to tailor your application to a
specific handset. All Motorola phones may have the same KVM but they don't
all have the same APIs and what's more other vendors have different KVMs.

I would also like to correct an early posting, the Accompli 008 DOES have
up, down, left, right, fire - they are just very well hidden.

I would like to introduce the kGame group for guys who want to design J2ME
games for actual handsets, rather than www.javamobiles.com/midlets where the
stuff only works on PC based emultors. I would like to look at real world
issues of gaming architectures for J2ME. I would also like to look at an XML
based solution for tailoring MIDP applications for specific handsets.

I would also like to pursue my introduction of x-parseJ as an addition to
kXML. I have heard that there may be heap sizes as small as 96K and I think
that you will definitely need the DOM compaction that this offers. Maybe
kXML could be used for large heap sizes and x-parseJ could be used for small
heap sizes.

I am not sure how I start up kGame, so if anyone is interested then please
drop me a line.

As for x-parseJ for low heap devices, I am currently investigating and will
post my results.

Finally as regards to the Accompli 008 and similar hardware questions, just
fire away if you have any questions and I'll try and supply the answers.

All the best,

Peter
